The Council on Quality and Leadership
An organization that is working to improve the quality of life for people with intellectual, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities.
CQL came to Top Floor because they needed to solve a lot of problems they were struggling with in regards to their current website; both on the user side, but also the admin side. Because their website was not set up on a CMS, there were no page templates being used, making it very difficult, and time consuming to update their site manually every time.
That in turn, is what caused a lot of the problems for their users. The site structure was a mess - not well organized, and very confusing to follow the intended user path. Due to the lack of page templates, the content and layout were inconsistent throughout. This site needed a lot of work and Top Floor was brought in to sort it all out, and make dramatic improvements!
The Solution
A lot of work went into creating the new sitemap - reorganizing the structure, consolidating pages, and creating dedicated listing pages. The bulk of the site was centered around their resources - almost 400 pages worth - so it was crucial to create templates for each type; newsletters, articles, webinars, events, manuals, etc. To achieve a more consistent layout in their detail pages, it was important to establish various different content components, coupled with flexible templates in the back-end, to make the pages not only consistent visually, but much easier for the admin to update, and create new pages.
Accessibility was also a big factor in this design, due to the demographic of their audience. All of the choices that were made; colors, links, active states, actionable and graphical indicator elements, followed the WCAG standards. A font sizer feature was also included, to address those with vision difficulties.
